Let’s face it, we have all been waiting far too long for Frank Ocean’s latest album ‘Boys Don’t Cry’. So his producer took to Reddit for an AMA to try and explain the delay.
Malay, whose real name is James Ho, worked closely with Frank Ocean on the singer’s much-loved and highly-acclaimed 2012 debut Channel Orange, co-producing nine of its 17 tracks. ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ was initially expected to be released in July 2015 and then July of this year. Then we all expected it to finally arrive on August 5, but we’re still waiting.
Malay took to Reddit yesterday and opened up on what it’s like to work with Frank Ocean in the studio, what Frank smells like, and, yes, when Frank might decide to drop the album. He also offered up a possible reason for the delay, and there was also a lot of bizarre emoji use and mysterious references for all you Ocean detectives out there – check them out below along with our favourite question and answers.
When you say Frank is always in the studio, what is it like being in there with him? What is his work ethic like?
Malay: Very focused and persistent… Yet very free.
What was the overall vibe like while working on Channel Orange?
Malay: Two friends hanging out.
As mysterious a man as he seems to be, what is Frank really like based on your experience with him as a friend and a producer?
What does Frank Ocean smell like?
Malay: If God was a woman and 💨🌻🌺🌸💐🌼🌷🍁🌹
I’d like to know what you think about how fans have interacted with the rollout (of Boys Don’t Cry) to this point? I think the major pain point for fans has been the fact that Frank has led us to believe there’s something coming, and then he hasn’t communicated with us at all. I feel like I’ve put some amount of trust in Frank and gotten really excited about the rollout he’s chosen to give us, but I believe that’s been betrayed to an extent.
Malay: First of all we all massively appreciate and love you guys, Frank has told me this himself many times. To be fair though, art cannot be rushed. It’s about making sure the perfect aesthetic for the situation has been reached, to do that, takes constant tweaking, trial and error… That goes for any creative situation.
I don’t care to know about the release date or any other details surrounding the album, but just please answer this for the sake of my mental health: was the album actually supposed to drop on August 5?
Malay: Never heard of an actual date… Then again I don’t pay attention to a lot of stuff 🎈
Yo Malay, this is Ryan. Frank is with me, he said you can tell ’em the release date. Cheers, bro.
Aside from all of that you must of heard about the Booty Club by now, well Malay was throwing the mysterious reference around during the AMA and fans were getting rather excited about a possible invite to this party.
To some questions he told fans that, “the answer is at the Booty Club” and that we should all “stay tuned for tickets and rules” for it.
Malay finally signed off by saying, “See y’all at the booty club 🍵🍵🍵.”
Well we’re not sure how insightful that really was and if we are ever actually going to hear the latest album. So i guess we’ll all just have to be patient for a little while longer!
